Jacksonville-area volunteers turned Sept. 11 into a day of service at the University of North Florida Arena, where 719 people packed 340,992 meals for Feeding Northeast Florida.
The meal-packing effort was part of 9/11 Day, a national nonprofit initiative working to make the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks a day centered on unity and service.
Jacksonville was one of 50 cities participating in simultaneous events. Across the country, about 50,000 volunteers were expected to pack at least 17 million meals for people at risk of hunger.
