Hogwarts Castle has stood over The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Universal's Islands of Adventure since the land opened in June 2010, and for more than 16 years its weathered, multi-toned stone facade was part of what made it feel authentic. That familiar look is now a thing of the past after a major exterior refurbishment that began in March 2026 and wrapped up by early June.
Crews repainted the entire castle exterior while Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey continued to operate inside throughout the project. Once the scaffolding came down, the difference was noticeable: sections of the castle now read as cooler and more uniform in tone, with less of the warm variation between gray, beige, brown, and aged stone that guests had grown accustomed to. The rockwork beneath the castle also appears darker than before. A before-and-after TikTok comparison went viral and drew sharp reactions, with some fans saying the finish now looks too smooth or uniform, and others likening the darker result to Hogwarts as it appeared during the Battle of Hogwarts in the films.
Universal has not described the project as a redesign — it was maintenance-driven refurbishment — and the physical structure, skyline silhouette, and attraction inside are all unchanged. Still, for guests who have visited for years, the repainted exterior represents a meaningful visual shift.
The updated castle is now front and center in Universal's Harry Potter programming. Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle returned to Islands of Adventure on September 5, running on select dates through November 1, with projection mapping covering the freshly painted facade with Dementors, Death Eaters, and Voldemort imagery. Roaming Death Eaters are also appearing in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida on the same select dates. Both are part of Harry Potter's 25 Years of Magic, Universal's yearlong celebration of the franchise.

More Wizarding World changes may be on the horizon elsewhere on property. Construction permits connected to Epic Universe reference a project code associated with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, covering roughly 150,000 square feet, though Universal has not announced what that work will produce.
