Walt Disney World guests visiting Magic Kingdom this week are getting their first clear look at the Haunted Mansion's newly refreshed exterior, as the last visible signs of a multi-month refurbishment have largely come down. A small section of tan scrim fabric and a piece of green netting still cling to fence posts near the exit queue, but the building's facade is otherwise fully on display for the first time in months.
The visual difference is hard to miss. Decades of Florida sun and weather had left the mansion's exterior looking flat and washed out — a monotone tan that read as tired rather than eerie. The refreshed facade brings back deeper red brickwork, a sharper cool-gray trim, and metallic green finishes on the cupola, ironwork, and other architectural details that give the structure the dimensional, layered quality it had when it first opened in 1971. The queue area also received attention, with several gravestones rearranged and their famously punny epitaphs shuffled into new positions along the approach to the foyer.
One open question is what happens with the greenery. Shrubs, vines, and climbing plants previously covered portions of the walls and railings, and it remains to be seen whether Disney will introduce new plantings in those spots or simply let existing vegetation grow back in over time.
The timing of the refresh appears to be about more than routine upkeep. With the Piston Peak National Park expansion and a Disney Villains land both under development near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, sections of the Haunted Mansion that were previously tucked away backstage will soon be visible to guests approaching from new directions. The exterior overhaul positions the attraction to hold up under that expanded sightline.
