Disney's Facility Asset Management team has filed a new construction permit tied to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, listing the project as "General Construction" with Coastal Steel named as the contractor. The permit is a matter of public record, and while it confirms work is planned at the attraction, it doesn't spell out exactly what that work involves or where on the property it will take place.
The involvement of a steel contractor is what's drawing attention. Coastal Steel has experience with themed environments and roller coaster systems, which puts this filing in a different category than a routine permit for painting or electrical updates. Cosmic Rewind opened in May 2022 and uses a sprawling enclosed show building with rotating ride vehicles — the kind of sophisticated infrastructure that naturally requires increasingly involved upkeep as the years go by.
That said, there's plenty of room for this work to happen without guests ever noticing. Steel-related maintenance could take place overnight, entirely backstage, or in areas of the attraction's massive building that have no bearing on daily ride operations. The fact that the permit originated with Facility Asset Management — rather than a design or development team — points toward routine upkeep as the more likely scenario.
As of now, Walt Disney World has not announced a closure or refurbishment period for Cosmic Rewind, and there are no dates on the park's operating calendar reflecting a planned shutdown. Guests with upcoming EPCOT trips have no reason to adjust their plans based on this filing alone, though it's worth keeping an eye on Disney's schedule over the coming weeks in case that changes.
