Disney never announced a reason for draining the fountain, and no visible construction or maintenance activity was spotted around the area during the downtime. One curious detail: coins tossed by guests remained visible on the empty basin floor, suggesting the water wasn't removed simply for routine cleaning or coin collection.
The current fountain has been part of EPCOT's entrance since a redesign in 2020. Though it's a relatively recent addition, it was conceived with the park's original fountain in mind. Three lucite pylons bearing the EPCOT logo serve as a centerpiece, and after dark, color-changing lights on the fountain are synchronized with the illumination on Spaceship Earth — a combination that's become a draw for photographers and longtime Disney fans alike.
