If you've ever marveled at the devotion Duffy & Friends inspires — the matching plush sets, the coordinated costumes, the hours-long waits for character meets — the numbers have finally caught up with the passion. Tasia Filippatos, President and Managing Director of Disney Parks International, revealed during a Disney Experiences presentation at D23 that the Duffy franchise generates roughly $500 million in retail sales every single year.
Filippatos made the disclosure while discussing how international guests have shaped their own distinct Disney experiences, pointing to the Asian resort fanbase as the true engine behind Duffy's growth. The character got his start at Walt Disney World in 2002 as "The Disney Bear," but it was a 2005 reimagining at Tokyo DisneySea — complete with a new name and an emotional backstory — that ignited the phenomenon. From one character, the franchise has since grown to seven, with Duffy, ShellieMay, Gelatoni, StellaLou, CookieAnn, 'Olu Mel, and LinaBell each finding devoted followings across Tokyo DisneySea, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disney Resort.
Disney Parks International Chairman Thomas Mazloum opened the D23 presentation, which also featured Disneyland Resort President Jill Estorino, Walt Disney World Resort President Joe Schott, and Disney Signature Experiences President Natacha Rafalski. Filippatos, who noted she has been in her current role about five or six months, said the depth of affection she has witnessed at the Asian parks was among the things that surprised her most upon stepping into the position.
The franchise is continuing to expand its footprint. Duffy & Friends headlines an original musical called Duffy and the Friend Ship aboard the Disney Adventure cruise ship, marking the characters' first show at sea. Closer to home, a new Duffy & Friends merchandise collection is available through Mickey's of Glendale at D23, and Tokyo DisneySea is set to launch its Duffy & Friends Halloween merchandise, treats, and food souvenirs on August 25.
