Disney World's ongoing swap to solar-powered, compacting trash cans has reached two more corners of the resort. Five new bins are now installed in EPCOT's World Nature area, and seven sets have landed in Pandora – The World of AVATAR at Animal Kingdom — and both batches are actually themed to their surroundings.
The World Nature cans feature white fronts, gray EPCOT logos, and a bright neon green outer panel — a color that reads as intentional in a neighborhood built around The Land, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, and Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana. The Pandora units go a different direction: gray bodies with an orange stripe beneath the trash and recycle openings. Restrained, which makes sense given that Pandora already has bioluminescent plants and floating mountains doing the heavy lifting visually.
The rollout has been gradual since it kicked off at EPCOT in June near World Showcase, then expanded through areas including Japan, Italy, Test Track, and World Celebration. Animal Kingdom joined the program in July, starting at the park entrance and working outward to Asia, Discovery Island Trails, and now Pandora. The cans use rooftop solar panels to power internal compactors, which means fewer emptying trips for custodial staff. Guests open the lids by hand or foot pedal — a touchless system hygienic in theory, though Disney did have to release a tutorial video explaining the foot pedal after widespread guest confusion at launch.
Much of the early criticism centered on the first wave of unthemed cans, which looked generic against Disney's heavily designed environments, and on the rounded tops, which eliminated the flat surface guests had long used informally as a ledge for plates and drinks during EPCOT festivals. The World Nature and Pandora installations represent Imagineering's answer to that criticism: color palettes and logos tied specifically to each location. Indoor versions without solar panels have also appeared inside The Seas, The Land, and near Soarin', each carrying that pavilion's own logo.
