Both Magic Kingdom Monorail Lines Went Down on Sept. 16

Visitors heading to Magic Kingdom on September 16 ran into an unexpected transportation snag when not one but two Monorail routes stopped running in the same afternoon. The Express Monorail — the direct link between Magic Kingdom and the Transportation and Ticket Center — was the first to go down, with Disney posting notices at the park directing guests to find alternate transportation.

For a brief window, the Resort Monorail offered a reasonable workaround. That line takes a longer path, looping past the hotels along Seven Seas Lagoon before reaching both Magic Kingdom and TTC, but it does serve both destinations. The workaround didn't last long, though. Guests riding the Resort line were asked to exit at Disney's Contemporary Resort as that train was also taken out of service, and the Resort route subsequently stopped operating altogether. Express trains were spotted sitting idle near TTC and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort during the disruption.

Whether one underlying issue caused both shutdowns — or two separate problems happened to coincide — remained unclear, as Disney did not publicly explain what went wrong. The EPCOT Monorail, which runs between that park and TTC, continued operating normally throughout the incident, and weather did not appear to be a factor.

Guests weren't entirely without options: ferryboat service across Seven Seas Lagoon kept running during the disruption, and boats continued serving nearby resorts as well. Still, for anyone who had parked at TTC or was staying at a resort along the lagoon, the back-to-back closures added a layer of inconvenience that's easy to underestimate — Magic Kingdom guests park at TTC and rely on transit to bridge that last stretch to the park entrance, making Monorail hiccups more immediately felt there than at Disney's other parks.
