Walt Disney World is heading into its 56th Christmas season, but longtime visitors will notice some familiar holiday staples missing from the lineup this year. Four traditions that once helped define the resort's Christmas experience have been permanently retired, the result of both deliberate decisions and major construction changes reshaping the parks.
At Magic Kingdom, Cinderella Castle will no longer wear the iconic Dream Lights — the thousands of individual lights that gave the castle an icy, wintry glow each holiday season. Disney last presented the Dream Lights in 2019, and projections have taken their place since. This year, the returning Frozen Holiday Surprise show will again handle the castle's holiday transformation. Over at Disney's Animal Kingdom, the closure of DinoLand U.S.A. in February 2026 took the seasonal Dino Institute Santa Claus meet-and-greet with it. The land is being redeveloped into Tropical Americas, and this marks the first Christmas the park won't offer that particular Santa experience since it originally debuted.
Hollywood Studios has its own loss: Muppets Courtyard, which brought a playful, character-driven Christmas atmosphere to the park, was permanently closed on June 8, 2025, to make way for the upcoming Monstropolis land inspired by Monsters, Inc. Guests who loved the whimsical Muppet holiday décor won't find it anywhere in the park this season. Beyond the theme parks, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will also look different — the resort's massive gingerbread house, a lobby centerpiece since 1999 that guests could browse and purchase treats from, has been permanently retired as the lobby has been reimagined, including the addition of the Birdcage Bar.
The changes don't signal a scaled-back Christmas overall. Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party returns to Magic Kingdom, Disney Jollywood Nights comes back to Hollywood Studios, EPCOT will host the International Festival of the Holidays, and Animal Kingdom will again feature the Merry Menagerie, among other seasonal offerings. Decorations, entertainment, and special food will still fill the resort throughout the season.
