Walt Disney World marked its 55th anniversary on Oct. 1, 2026, looking back on its 1971 opening and ahead to a wide slate of construction and reimagining projects across the Central Florida resort.

Disney said it has opened or refreshed more than 70 experiences since 2021—nearly a theme park’s worth, according to the company. Its next major developments include Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios; Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom; and a Magic Kingdom expansion featuring Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land.

Other projects on Disney’s list include Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge, a new version of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, a Spaceship Earth reimagining and the return of Expedition Everest’s Yeti effects. Disney also identified eight projects introduced or refreshed this year, including updates tied to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Soarin’ and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

“As we celebrate 55 years, we’re proud of the incredible Cast Members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead,” Walt Disney World Resort President Joe Schott said in a statement. He said the resort’s growth reflects Disney’s long-term confidence in Central Florida.

Disney World encompasses nearly 30,000 acres, including four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs, a sports complex and more than 25 resort hotels, Disney said. The company employs about 80,000 Cast Members and anticipates creating 5,000 jobs during the next five years.

For visitors planning Disney World tickets, the anniversary update is primarily a look at projects still to come rather than an announcement of new 55th-anniversary park offerings.
