More than a year after a truck struck the bridge crossing the Sassagoula River at Disney's Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, the distinctive decorative arches that once framed that crossing are still missing. The accident occurred on July 25, 2025, and while the bridge reopened the following day and water transportation was quickly restored, the damaged arched structures were removed and never replaced. As of September 17, 2026, orange barriers continue to line both sides of the bridge, and though portions of the surface have been sanded and repainted, the larger ornamental elements remain absent.
The gap is made more noticeable by active construction just downstream. A Sassagoula River wall replacement project that began near Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa earlier this year has been progressing steadily into the Port Orleans corridor. Site observations from mid-September show one completed section of new wall with fresh landscaping already in place, while excavators and crews work to extend the project further along the waterway. Substantial infrastructure investment is moving forward along the same river the bridge spans — making the unfinished crossing increasingly conspicuous.
Port Orleans – Riverside is already in the middle of an extensive refresh. Disney has officially noted that guest rooms are undergoing refurbishment from early May 2025 through August 2027, and construction has touched additional areas including the walkway around Riverside Mill Food Court. Taken together, guests visiting the resort right now are navigating a property in the middle of significant — if uneven — change.
None of this affects day-to-day transportation. Disney continues to advertise watercraft service on the Sassagoula River Cruise, which connects Riverside with Disney Springs, French Quarter, Old Key West, and Saratoga Springs. But because the river and its banks are genuinely central to the Port Orleans experience — jogging paths, carriage rides, and waterfront recreation all rely on that scenery — bridge railings and decorative details matter more here than they might at other resorts. Barriers that might look temporary in week one start to read differently after several seasons.
