Something lit up the sky above Disney's Hollywood Studios late Tuesday evening — and nobody at Disney said a word about it beforehand. Multiple observers reported seeing large fireworks shells launched one at a time from inside the park, with gaps of roughly 90 seconds between each shot. The sporadic pattern made clear this wasn't a polished show, but rather technical testing of some kind.

What makes the activity stand out is where the shells appeared to originate. The launch site across World Drive from the park has seen very little action since Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular ended when Walt Disney World shut down in March 2020 and never returned. That show once combined fireworks with projections, lasers, and fire effects around the Chinese Theatre, forming the cornerstone of the park's nighttime entertainment for nearly four years.

Disney hasn't announced a new fireworks show for Hollywood Studios, but there are a handful of plausible explanations for the test. A private event tied to the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo is booked at the park on October 20, and Disney has incorporated fireworks into private events before. The holiday season is another possibility — Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! is confirmed to return during Disney Jollywood Nights in 2026, and if Disney plans to scale up the pyrotechnics beyond what recent years have featured, some advance testing would make sense. New Year's Eve countdown shows at Hollywood Studios in both 2024 and 2025 have also included fireworks, though those relied on rooftop pyro rather than the larger World Drive site.

The timing lands as Hollywood Studios is deep into a period of transformation. Recent additions include Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure, and a reworked Rock 'n' Roller Coaster built around The Muppets. The Magic of Disney Animation is scheduled to open September 14, and a full Monstropolis land featuring Disney's first suspended roller coaster is expected to begin opening in 2027.

For now, Disney hasn't commented on what the Tuesday night testing was connected to — or whether regular fireworks might eventually return to Hollywood Studios in a permanent capacity. This story was first reported by Disney Fanatic.
