Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is about to undergo one of its most significant infrastructure overhauls yet. On August 7, 2026, the South Florida Water Management District issued a permit approving a 3.6-acre parking expansion at the Victorian-themed flagship resort — a project that will reshape how guests arrive and move around the south side of the property.
The heart of the project is creating one continuous parking area that links the Grand Floridian's Disney Vacation Club building to the newly opened Island Tower at the neighboring Polynesian Village Resort. Tucked into the permit details is an appealing addition: a covered walkway connecting the DVC building directly to the Wedding Pavilion parking loop, offering shelter from Florida's notorious afternoon downpours for guests heading to events or simply navigating between the two resorts.
The parking work is closely tied to the broader World Drive North Phase III road project, which is actively rerouting traffic around the Magic Kingdom resort corridor. A new section of Floridian Way opens August 10, 2026, temporarily channeling drivers onto a newly built stretch of road while northbound lanes are still under construction. New roundabouts are also being installed to smooth out traffic flow, and the Wedding Pavilion is slated to receive a dedicated entrance just south of its current access point. Disney expects the full World Drive North project to wrap up by late 2027.
Meanwhile, the Grand Floridian Cafe — known for its buttermilk-fried chicken and Mickey-shaped waffles — closed in mid-July 2026 for an interior refresh and is expected to reopen in October 2026. Separately, porte cochere construction at the main entrance will continue into early 2027, pushing back the resort's overall renovation completion from the original mid-2026 target. On the brighter side, the resort's reimagined lobby and The Perch lobby bar both debuted in late 2025, and the beloved Garden View Tea Room reopened in March 2026 after a six-year hiatus.
