Disney Cruise Line has reached a significant environmental milestone: by the close of fiscal 2025, the line had eliminated more than 99% of all guest-facing, non-essential single-use plastics across its ships and Bahamian island destinations. The achievement is the result of years of incremental changes spanning dining, retail, housekeeping, and supply chain operations — most of them driven by the crew members working closest to guests each day.
In dining areas, single-use staples like plastic straws, cutlery, merchandise bags, and individual condiment packets are already gone fleetwide. Teams have since turned their attention to packaging, shifting toward bulk dispensing and reusable serving ware across dining rooms, quick-service spots, and buffets. Retail operations have made a similarly quiet but cumulative impact: switching to reusable shopping bags alone has kept nearly one million plastic bags per year out of circulation. Plastic water bottles have been replaced with recyclable aluminum alternatives, and specialty drinks at 24-hour beverage stations are now served in plastic-free paper cups.
Disney's island destinations have become proving grounds for these practices. Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point was built from the ground up with waste reduction in mind and operates entirely without guest-facing single-use plastics, using reusable dishware, flatware, and cups throughout. Those same service items have since been rolled out at Disney Castaway Cay, where redesigned waste stations now incorporate separate receptacles for recycling and food scraps directly into the guest environment.
Behind the scenes, housekeeping and supply chain teams are driving some of the largest numbers. Refillable bath product dispensers in staterooms eliminate more than 2.2 million individual plastic amenity containers annually. Castaway Club loyalty gifts — lanyards and amenities — are now wrapped in paper-based materials rather than plastic sleeves, a change that has removed more than three million plastic sleeves from operations since 2024. On the supply side, reusable pallet covers at loading docks in Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, and Singapore have replaced the plastic wrap previously used to protect incoming merchandise.
