Orlando took a meaningful step Tuesday toward building a $61 million event center directly across from Camping World Stadium, as the city's Municipal Planning Board approved a demolition permit for the existing church and other properties currently occupying the site along West Church Street.
The proposed 140,000-square-foot facility is part of Orlando's broader $400 million Tourist Development Tax investment tied to a renovation of Camping World Stadium. Plans call for a central field house capable of hosting sporting and civic events, along with concession areas and a mezzanine — all designed to strengthen the city's growing downtown sports and entertainment district.
The project would occupy an entire city block, and its own parking lot is included in the plans. City officials note that traffic impact is expected to be minimal — the project is not projected to generate 1,000 average daily vehicle trips or trigger a 10% increase on nearby roads, so a formal traffic study is not required. Still, some residents living near the stadium have flagged existing congestion during major events as a concern.
Supporters in the community have welcomed the development, pointing to potential benefits for surrounding neighborhoods. The project still requires final city approvals before construction can begin, though officials say a groundbreaking could happen as early as the end of 2026.
