Caladesi Island State Park, one of Pinellas County's most beloved natural escapes, could grow significantly if Florida moves forward with a proposed acquisition of a neighboring 42-acre barrier island property. Known as Mandalay Bay, the parcel sits just north of Clearwater Beach and was formally added to the Florida Forever program's anticipated purchases list in June.
The property has been on the market since early 2024 at a listing price of $37 million and includes a three-bedroom, three-bath home — the fate of which remains undecided if the state proceeds. The Florida Forever program, which uses dedicated state funds to acquire land for conservation and recreation, is the vehicle being considered for the purchase, with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection overseeing the evaluation.
State records suggest the land could serve as critical habitat for sea turtles as well as several threatened or protected shorebird species, including snowy plovers, least terns, and American oystercatchers. The relatively untouched nature of the property makes it a strong candidate for wildlife conservation.
Clearwater Mayor Bruce Rector has voiced support for the deal, noting that connecting Mandalay Bay with Caladesi Island State Park could open up new ways for visitors to reach the park. Currently, most guests arrive via ferry from nearby Honeymoon Island State Park. Rector noted that a connected parcel could eventually allow people to walk from North Clearwater Beach directly into the park — a change he believes would also boost local tourism.
