If you've visited Disney's Animal Kingdom lately and found yourself navigating an unexpected maze of plywood barriers near the heart of the park, you're not alone. Large sections of the Discovery Island Trails — the winding, shaded pathways that curl around the iconic Tree of Life — have been closed for months, and Walt Disney World has yet to announce when guests can expect them to reopen.
The closures trace back to the conversion of the longtime 4D show It's Tough to Be a Bug! into a brand-new 3D experience called Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, which opened November 7, 2025. Transforming the underground theater required construction crews to access the tree's sprawling root system, prompting the installation of heavy perimeter walls along the surrounding trails. Even after the new show debuted to guests, those barriers stayed in place — crews have continued working on hardscape repairs, land grading, and landscaping updates around the base of the 145-foot structure.
The ongoing closure has real consequences for visitors. The blocked pathways cut off animal viewing areas home to flamingos, otters, and tortoises, eliminate some of the park's best photography angles on the Tree of Life's carved facade, and push guest traffic onto the narrow bridges connecting Discovery Island to Pandora, Africa, and Asia — creating noticeable bottlenecks during busy afternoon hours. The situation is compounded by the simultaneous multi-year demolition of DinoLand U.S.A., which is being cleared to make way for Tropical Americas, an 11-acre land planned around Encanto and Indiana Jones.
Unlike ride refurbishments, which typically carry estimated return dates on Disney's official operational calendar, trail closures come with no published timeline. Theme park analysts expect construction activity around the Tree of Life to continue throughout 2026 as crews also manage connections to the future Tropical Americas land. Until the perimeter walls come down, guests should plan for extra detour time when navigating the park's central hub and check current park maps before visiting.
